Direct approach: The Navigator
The navigator approach is similar and statistically as successful to the inside track, but as you have no developed contacts inside the target organisations (start with a list of 50, whittle them down to 20 through simple research), you need to develop a contact base. With the development of business orientated social networking, and the increase in the number of companies offering existing employees bonuses for the successful introduction of new hires, this method is a lot easier than it ever was. It requires the same clarity of though on who you are/what you want out of your career as the inside tack, with similar levels of research effort on the target organisations, but development of suitable insider contacts. On average five times more successful than applying via job adverts in newspapers or job boards, with a 15% chance of being employed from companies you target on your researched list. The next set of three job search options have differing rates of success, but have two things in common:

You will follow a defined HR process to be hired
As the positions are openly advertised for, you will have high levels of competition. Expect 5 people to make it to the interview stage for each single position being recruited for, multiplied by three fold back down each stage of the recruitment process (ie: application, CV sift, online testing, telephone interview, etc). Don’t expect to be treated like you or a human being, the process is designed to be selective in a non-judgemental way. You hence have little choice in the race you are about to take part in, expect that you chose to enter it, and hence have little ability to affect its outcome. Your chances of being recruited via this method once you hit the apply button or send your application through the post are between 3% and 5%, although this can easily be doubled with some simple effort

Job board: The Donkey
Of all the methods of job search, the job board is the most common and actively used by many present day job seekers. Yet, the statistics show that only 12% of all positions are fulfilled by job boards in any market. If so few jobs are fulfilled by job boards, why do most unsuccessful long term job seekers spend most of their days trawling job boards? Simply, it doesn’t require much effort to find or apply for jobs on a job board, but gives the job seeker the regular internal satisfaction of being able to say at the end of each day “yes honey, I spent the day job seeking!” As a recruiter, I know that some of those jobs “advertised” on job boards do not exist. The job board market is so competitive – with around 50,000 job boards in North America, and 50,000 around the rest of the world – that the cost of advertising a job on a job board can be as little as free. If the cost of doing something was free, and add in that you can repeat the same job advert for ever simply by ticking a repeat button, how often would you do that task? In a recent test, of 126 jobs advertised as available in a large city, an employment organisation found that the actual number of jobs fulfilling the search criteria was 10! When there are so many “false” or repeat job adverts, and when it is so easy to CV fish, is it any wonder that you chances of success via a job board can drop as low as 2%?

This is one reason why job hunting takes so long. If you need to see 45 employers to find a job, it only makes sense to see as many employers a week as possible. Determine to see no fewer than two employers per week at a minimum! Do this for as many months as your job-hunt lasts. Keep going until you find the kind of employer who wants to hire you! Looking for a job is a numbers game. The more contacts you make, the more interviews you’ll get. The more interviews you have, the more offers you’ll get.
  9. Be prepared for phone interviews. Would you believe that over 50% of prospective candidates are disqualified after the first phone contact is made with them by an employer? In today’s world, employers don’t have time anymore to interview every possible applicant and are using phone calls as a less expensive, less time consuming way to weed out potentially unqualified candidates. The phone interview catches many people off guard. You might receive more than just one phone interview, and you have to pass them all. The interviewer usually makes up his or her mind within the first five minutes. The remainder of the time is spent just confirming first impressions.
  10. Create a support group. It is easy to get discouraged, depressed and despondent (the three D’s) in the job-hunt process. This can be one of the toughest and loneliest experiences in the world and the rejection you may have to face can be brutal, but it doesn’t have to be. The key is in understanding that you are not alone. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people looking for work, and you can team up with one if you choose. Many job-hunting groups already exist, such as the local Chambers of Commerce and online support groups through the Internet. Find a partner, or a larger group, and support and encourage each other. The path to success is literally a phone call away.
  11. Contact potential employers directly through professional associations. Professional associations provide excellent networks for your benefit. Almost all committed professionals are members of at least one or two professional networks. Usually membership includes a directory, which provides you with a direct networking resource for verbal contact and mail campaigns. Additionally, most professional associations hold regularly scheduled meetings, which provide further opportunities to mingle with your professional peers on an informal basis. Finally, professional associations all have newsletters that are a valuable resource for other trade publications, associations, and help wanted sections.
  12. Post your resume online. In today’s world there are numerous resume databases on the web. Job hunters can now tap into giant online databases when launching a search prior to interviewing. There are three primary ways to job search electronically or online: Joblines, Bulletin Board Systems (BBS), and the Internet. Many employers today have their employment opportunities accessible through a simple phone call. Every call you make is an opportunity to sell yourself to a prospective employer, to pursue a new job opening, or to obtain a referral. Your technique in the initial telephone call can have a categorical impact on your chances to obtain what you want from the call. Complete at least 15 calls per day. You will be astonished at the results. Always be agreeable, gentle, and positive. Smile when you speak; the listener will hear it. Prepare a brief outline for each call and rehearse it. It is only once their job application has been rejected, that most job seekers get an insight in why their job application failed.

Unfortunately this tells them that with some fore thought, they could have figured this out for themselves. Let me help you avoid these common mistakes, and give you some insider advice on how to maximise your job application success

Job Application: it’s a personnel thing

All job applications do not start with the job seeker, but with the employer. A job is approved inside an organisation through the combination of two forces:

Business need
The manager of the team in which the job will be fulfilled
This is an important insight, as it should tell you that the final decision on who is employed is made by that manager, and that the successful job applicant will be considered the most able to deliver the defined business requirements.

The result of these two forces is the creation of a job description, from which the job advert is derived. Only after the job is approved to this stage, does job application become a personnel process. But not recognising the human beings wholly in the personal exchange – the manager and the successful jobholder – is a key mistake of many job applicants

You and Your Job Search

A job application starts long before you start reading newspapers, crawling job boards, trudging to the Job Centre or chatting to friends. Your job search starts with you, and a clear definition of:

Who and what you are
What you hence offer
What you want to do/see yourself doing long term
If you don’t know what you want to do, then any job will do, and hence multiple job application rejection will follow

Job Market testing

Although you now know what you want to do, the jobs market may at that point in time not want those exact skills, in that search geography, for the pay level which makes economic sense to you. You need to test that the job market is offering that job at the right pay level, and this is where the real advantage of the jobs board driven job search becomes apparent.

Again, go to your favourite jobs board, and if after filling in your desired criteria there are more than 100 job results returned, then go back and more closely define what you offer an employer/seek next and long term. Falling into any job will do syndrome means that you are not focusing sufficiently in the eyes of the employer on what you can do well/offer, and hence will be rejected.

Professional CV

Although it disappoints me to say it, as a Professional CV Writer if you approach your job search in a particular manner, you don’t actually need a Professional CV. But, for 95% of job applications, you will at some point in the legal and hence defined HR process need a CV. In the modern world, a one-size fits all CV just won’t get you the required telephone interview: the only output action required when an employer takes when presented with a good CV.

If like many today you heard a friend or someone in a pub used a free template successfully to get employed, make sure you don’t follow the herd: templates mean you don’t stand out from the crowd. Job application confidence

This is the last point of job application rejection, and it is a general issue throughout the current job-seeking world: personal confidence. Job seeking in itself is a job, and it is a tough one. There is research, marketing, paperwork, cold calling, direct costs and worst of the lot: a high level rejection. Even the successful job seekers will be rejected at least once, which means that their success ratio is 50%. I haven’t yet met an unsuccessful job seeker who was in some way lacking in self-confidence. It is one of the reasons that I decided to in part cross the divide and become a CV Writer, because universally in most job searches the CV is a common point. If you read through this article, and are still wondering why you are rejected, then after looking in the mirror get out with friends and family and remember what’s important. After taking a break for a day or two, then go back to applying for jobs with renewed vigour, and seek some help in your job search.

Especially in challenging economic times and an employer driven job market, companies are being more selective about their job applicants.

Take a few minuets and search for yourself online to determine what your digital footprint is. Do you share a name with someone that could create a career opportunity or a problem with your online image?

Use your personal brand to let the employer know your strengths, why they should hire you, and that you are a worthy candidate to investment in. If you remember, the personal brand is your life and professional skills as they appear online. You want your personal brand to be accurate and truthful, but you also want to it to make you look great to an employer. Your brand should reflect your overall qualifications, education, and indicate your career goals.

See what shows up in a Google search and a Yahoo search. Having a LinkedIn profile and profiles on other professional social networking sites can help to create a positive digital footprint. Your profile should be professional and consistent. Keep your information consistent with similar career goals and career objectives in each profile. Avoid blending social media and your online professional image. It is important to keep your private life PRIVATE. That is a mistake many people make with personal branding which may cost them being selected for that next job or opportunity.

3) Changing Careers or Branching Out to New Industries

Diversify you job search and branch out into new job markets you may not have considered in your previous job hunting strategies. Pick a career field, any career field and determine if your skills and qualifications would translate into new job opportunities.

That is not to say that you should just apply for the first job opening that presents itself. As a matter of fact, the opposite is true. Choose a career field that may benefit from your professional knowledge. Your best option is to look at a small geographic area and determine what employers are within this region. Examine what the area employer’s job positions and the job descriptions they are seeking and compare the qualifications to your resume. A midlife career change into a new industry can appear challenging but rewriting a career change resume and cover letter can quickly expand your employment options.

Examine your strengths. If you are not good with people, do not apply to personnel jobs. If you do not have an aptitude for math, do not apply for engineering or accounting jobs. Choose an industry or career field you know you can succeed in and focus your job search in that field. Get some help. If month after month has passed with no job offers or employment prospect you may need some help with your job hunt. You do not want to be put in a position where your financial obligations overtake you focusing on your job search.

Recent college graduates and college alumni can use their college’s career services department. Beyond employment listings and postings, many college career service departments offer interview preparation assistance, resume writing and career advice, and can assist you in choosing a career path. These services are often helpful when you are considering changing careers or at a career transition. Also, many companies seek out students from specific universities, colleges, and specific degree program or departments. A career advisor in the schools career services can connect you with these companies.

Beyond the college or university career services centers, look into what career placement services your local city or county provides. Contact your local chamber of commerce to begin your search for these types of local services. Many of these services are either free of charge or at a minimal fee to local residents.

Depending on your specific situation, consider hiring a professional career advisor or career counselor. A professional career counselor’s job is to help you figure out exactly what you want to do and advise you on how to maximize your resources and qualifications.

Before electing to get a career counselor, do some research on what services the career counseling service provides and what their recent candidate placement success rates are. This way, you will know what to expect as an end result. Will they help you find a career path, provide resume writing advice and interview preparation, placement services, and help you along the way? Do not be afraid to ask for help when the job search seems to be dragging on. Having a career advisor or an independent career service can help you revitalize your job hunt.

5) Is Your Resume Writing Reflective of your Career Objective

However, your chances in getting noticed on these online job search sites are low. Thousands of career professionals and job seekers are posting and updating their resumes daily, and in a highly competitive job market, being too general with your career objectives may not result in you landing that job.

Take some time to research what are the best job search sites, specific to your industry or career objectives. If your career field is within the medical industry, look for those web sites that focus specifically on medical jobs or nursing jobs. Expand your career and look for part time job search opportunities to get into a company or organization.

Be focused and specific in your job search and make sure you are looking everywhere. Limiting yourself to just a few major job sites can be disastrous. Many of the jobs you are seeking may not be listed on the common and the most popular job search engines. So, try looking at lesser known job sites, and on industry specific ones. Check your local newspaper daily, especially on Sunday editions. Sometimes a job listing may be printed on only one day in the newspaper.

Whatever you do, do not stop looking until you find what you are looking for.

7) Revisit your Long Term Career Choices

What long term career planning steps have you considered throughout your professional career. Often times we can become comfortable and somewhat complacent within our chosen occupation after we have met certain education and experience requirements. However, over time we can loose our job security if our skills are not continually up to date or with economic shifts, technology innovations, or company restructuring.

If you find yourself in a position where there does not appear to be any jobs in your career field, they you may consider changing industries. Change can be good, but when you mention changing careers, often people confuse this with more schooling or education, significant changes in their schedule, or starting back at the beginning. While any change may require some retraining or new on the job knowledge, changing careers maybe easier then one would think.

Examine what parallel industries or other careers use your same talents. Seek out career counseling and take several career tests to help you determine what industries you maybe unaware of that use your qualifications. A career counselor can help you with this decision and provide you some inside knowledge on specific career fields. If you do not have a career counselor, then you may want think about who in your local area hire professionals with your skills and list all the things you loved about your old job. Then look for jobs that have those same qualities. You can also look at things you disliked about your old job, and look for jobs that do not have those qualities. Take a reputable personally or career test and consider jobs that work for your personality type.

The worst thing you can do is nothing, especially if you see major changes coming in your career field where your future employment could be effected. A proactive approach can open new doors and provide you with new career opportunities.

Wouldn’t you love a job where you can be your own boss, choose your own hours, work in a field in which you can apply your own talents and interests, do as much or as little as you need to and have nobody to answer to but yourself?

Actually many already do have such a job. According to a Gallup survey reported in the New York Times 43 percent of employed Americans spend at least some of their time outside of the office working remotely, but an increasing number are taking that one step further and have completely cut out the middle man, deploying strategies to eke out a living left entirely to their own devices, with no outside employer involved whatsoever.

Let the World Come to You

The emergence of the Internet as an instrument of mass communication is what has largely made this possible. Many take the view that going out into the big wide world to earn a living is no longer a necessity when the world has been brought into our living room. Just so long as we have a product or a service to sell and somebody else out there wants to buy it, the potential is there.

At the basic end of the scale the simplest way to make money from home is by selling items via such outlets as Etsy and eBay. Most use these as a means simply of making a few dollars by disposing of their unwanted, surplus items but inevitably such platforms for buying and selling soon brought forth a potential for ongoing business. Others make a usually modest but nonetheless regular income by completing online surveys.

For those of a more creative bent one area of opportunity which has expanded exponentially in recent years is self-publishing. The downside of being our own boss is the temptation to follow distractions, to put the work to one side with a promise to return to it later at some mythical “more convenient” time. What is more, creative ventures such as self-publishing usually also mean self-marketing. If nobody else has a pecuniary interest in your work, then nobody has an interest in helping you announce it to the world.

Then we have to recognise that not every earning opportunity has equal value. Online surveys, just to provide an example, can be an easy way to make money if the reward is attractive and the process delivers. When an interview offers a dollar for an hour’s work, or repeatedly screens us out after ten minutes of wasted effort, it can be much more difficult, so the skill we quickly need to develop is the ability to spot poor value rather than trying to work through and offset it. This is no small obstacle to overcome. Having to attend to children and family business, simple domestic obligations like laundry, shopping, cooking and the television can all compete for the employee’s attention. Without supervision some will undoubtedly lack the discipline to work the required number of hours with the required level of concentration to be able to replicate the performance they would provide in the workplace. Even people who work privately and independently from home, following such disciplines as freelancing, creative writing or filling in online surveys, are aware of the importance of creating the right ambience in which to work. A Constant Office Space

Fix a table, an ergonomic chair (yes, it is an investment you will not regret if you work from home regularly), and other essentials you might need for work, for example, a charging station for your computer or mobile phone around that area. Stick to that place the best you can while working and move away when you are not. You can still visit that area when you are not working, but make sure it is not close to the bed that you sleep in. In smaller houses this might be difficult to arrange but try to set up your workplace in a different room than your bedroom. Air Quality

While you are indoors through the major portion of the day, it is important to ensure you get sufficient ventilation, and good quality air to breathe. If you live in an area where the pollution level is low, keep your windows open at all times for the fresh air to stimulate your brain, and improve your efficiency. If, unfortunately, you live in an area where the outside air is horrid, an air purifier is recommended. Remember, your health is of utmost importance no matter from where you work.

Exercise

Although exercising is a mandate for everybody, it is even more crucial for people who work from home. When you are in office, you might take frequent breaks down to the cafeteria or a roadside tea/coffee shop, but when you are home, these breaks are eliminated from your routine. Hence, it is of utmost importance to exercise regularly. Choose whatever works for you – yoga, aerobics, weights, cardio, but be regular and diligent about it.

Venture Out

Make it a point to get out of the house at least for ten or fifteen minutes every working day. You could either run a quick errand such as going to the ATM, picking up dry-cleaning, buying dinner, and so on, or you could take a simple walk in your neighbourhood at the very least. Going outside once in a day and seeing other people on the road helps your brain relax, because, after all, we are all social beings.

Do Not Overwork

Many people, especially in the beginning, tend to feel guilty about not working from the office. They feel that they are not working enough, or something is missing. Some people have it even worse because others who go to office regularly have a tendency to point fingers and condemn those who work from home. Snide remarks such as “Oh, what do you know about the hectic traffic we go through”, or “You work from home, that must mean you have plenty of time”, to “I don’t think people who work from home actually get any work done”, are very commonly heard. Do not get bogged down by such things. Just because you work from home does not mean you should work longer hours. Fix your work hours as you would if you were in office, and stick to it.

What Not to Include in Your Curriculum Vitae

Did you know that there is such a thing as ‘over-share’ when it comes to applying for jobs? While most job seekers pride themselves in being forthcoming, there are certain things you simply should not include in your CV.

Let’s begin with your personal information and those demographic details that actually bear no relevance to your application. While some demographic information is requested for statistical purposes – or in South Africa for Employment Equity purposes – be sure that you are comfortable disclosing this information and that you do not feel that you might be discriminated against during the application process for having included it.

For instance, your marital or relationship status should have no relevance on your ability to do the job. It is also not necessary to disclose whether or not you have any dependants. Similarly, your age or religion should be of no concern to your future employers. The only time that you might choose to disclose your age is if you are nearing retirement and the company would therefore have to replace you in the very near future. You would of course also disclose if you are a minor – in which case you most likely shouldn’t be employing for full-time employment anyway. Unless you think that you might be getting a birthday card, don’t include your birthday either.

  1. It is always a general guideline to exclude your Identity Number from your Curriculum Vitae in the interest of protecting your CV against identity theft. However, when you submit your CV to any online job portal, you will most likely be asked to enter your Identity Number in order to validate that you are a legitimate person and to prevent duplication of your profile on their databases. These portals usually protect your personal details with a secure login. However if you have the option to upload your own CV as an attachment to your profile, rather remove your ID from the uploaded CV portion anyway. If the recruiter needs it for any reason, they will request it from you.

You may be asked during an interview or on an application form to disclose your race and disability status. While you are not compelled to include this information in your original Curriculum Vitae, it is probably best you disclose this during the short-listing stage if asked, as many companies require this information in order to meet their Employment Equity hiring quotas. If you are in doubt as to why you must provide this information, simply ask the interviewer politely as to the relevance of this question.

To further protect your confidentiality, never include your residential address on your CV. It is sufficient to simply list your suburb or region. This will give the recruiter an idea of where you are located for interviewing purposes, but will not give away your full physical address. If the recruiter needs it in order to present you with an offer, they can request this from you later.

It is alarming to see how many job applicants think that their outside interests and hobbies are actually of any interest to the recruiter. If the recruiter really wants to know how you entertain yourself after hours or what your interests are beyond work then they will most likely ask these questions during the interview stage.

Your initial Curriculum Vitae should be concise and to the point describing your skills and abilities in relation to the job you are applying to. It is therefore not necessary to list all your high school achievementsor accolades either. Unless you are a recent school-lever, this information is less important to a recruiter when considering your ability to perform in the job.

It is often considered distasteful to include your photograph on your CV. Not only does it appear somewhat tacky, it could also be considered as discriminatory should a recruiter judge an applicant on their appearance in the photograph. Your skills should market your suitability for the job, your presentation skills will be considered at the interview stage. Don’t afford recruiters an opportunity to judge you before they have even screened your CV or had the opportunity to let you sell yourself in the interview.

Your medical history is also not required on your CV. Whether or not you have a medical condition should not be used against or for you during the initial application phase. If for any reason you do suffer from a medical condition that might require the company to revisit their office access, or where you might be required to be absent for extended periods of time, then you might choose to disclose this during a final interview, certainly not upfront in your CV.

The same goes for your criminal status. While it is best to be honest, including any mention of a criminal record is not necessary in your CV. If the recruiter has a policy on criminal backgrounds, then they will mention this during the interview or screening phase. If you have been asked to disclose your criminal status, and you have been convicted of an offense, it is best to be honest about it. Unless you were convicted for an offense directly relating to the inherent requirement of the job (i.e. you were convicted for fraud and you are applying for position in accounts), then the recruiter may not discriminate against you. Most financial institutions in South Africa have a strict policy against this, but again it is not necessary to put this into your CV. If asked, only then do you disclose this level of information.

Now that we have covered the personal and demographic information, there is one more tip that we leave you with: Never ever bad mouth your previous employer or boss in your CV. If your reason for leaving was due to a bad relationship with your previous employer, simply list your reason for leaving as ‘to be discussed in the interview’ and only then explain the reason for your conflict – still, not slating them in the interview as this will make you look bad, even if you were not the evil one in the relationship.

Remember, at all times be honest and never misleading, and let your strengths be what stands out first in order to secure the interview.

As a career transition specialist I have determined that ten important steps must be followed in order to form a complete plan. As you read the steps below, assess for yourself if you have a grasp on some of these or if you need to develop and refine certain ones. You’ll know that you have mastered most if not all ten steps when you feel deep contentment with your career.

My pick for the ten practical basic steps to career development are:

1. Choose your “industry“. It may be as clear-cut as pharmaceuticals or physics or it may be a hybrid like combining social work with animal rescue. But whatever you decide, be clear that you are in a field that you care about and would like to grow within.

2. Determining and promoting your value proposition or unique selling proposition, including a branding process. Everyone needs to market themselves if they are to find career options and opportunities.

3. Having a strong resume. Preparing a resume that highlights your significance and employment value is more relevant today than ever before. Make this a document that has you truly shining.

4. Distributing cover letters that open doors. In general, the more targeted a cover letter is written, the greater are your chances for an interview. But also consider the cold cover letter that can make a hiring manager sit up and take notice.

5. Maximizing the power of LinkedIn. It’s a small jump from a solid resume to a powerful LinkedIn profile. Someone who may consider you for an interview or hiring will most likely look for your LI presence. Be there and look good.

6. Know job search best practices. Still looking in the newspaper for who is hiring? Job search techniques have been identified that will increase your chances of getting the work that you want. Become familiar with what works and don’t waste time and energy with what doesn’t.

9.Practice informational interviews. As a subset of the last two mentioned steps, informational interviews assist you in building a knowledge base and learning from people in the know. Setting up short fact gathering sessions with insiders expands both your intellectual and your social capital.

10. Strengthen your job interview performance. Being well prepared for all types of job interviews isn’t just about memorizing answers to common questions. It’s about leveraging confidence, knowledge, and skill to craft a presentation that leads to a satisfying career move.

Implementing a plan consisting of these ten steps will better position you for the work life you desire. Make no mistake, doing all of this is a lot of work and it’s not easy. But as the world of work moves increasingly toward one in which the professional is the primary caregiver of themselves, it’s a necessary one.
